Tilapia is a freshwater fish that primarily thrive in warmer habitats. This ever increasingly popular species was once native to only Africa, but now it has been introduced to the world and farmed in over 135 countries!
The meat does not have a strong fishy taste and is a great source of protein. They also have low levels of mercury.
This relatively inexpensive meat makes for great fillets combining with strong tasting sauces to extract the most out of the texture and the taste of the fish.
One of the most commonly found recipes to prepare this fish is by baking the fillet combined with lemon zest and butter.
Locally, it is common to grill this fish while adding sweet marinate consisting of ginger, onion, garlic, soya sauce and dipping it in belacan. Yum!
